What are the risk factors for neuropathy?

While neuropathy can happen to anyone, some factors boost your risk of developing it. Examples include:

  • Diabetes
  • Vitamin deficiencies
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Some infections
  • Arthritis
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Toxin exposure
  • Repetitive motions
  • Family history of neuropathy
  • Thyroid, liver, or kidney problems
 

Ways to reduce your risk of neuropathy discomfort include properly managing diabetes, arthritis, and chronic diseases, eating healthy foods, reducing or eliminating alcohol, not smoking, and avoiding toxin exposure. Getting regular exercise and reducing repetitive motions can also help.
