Shoulder pain is discomfort, stiffness, or weakness in the shoulder joint and the surrounding muscles, tendons, and bursae, most often caused by rotator cuff problems, tendinitis, bursitis, impingement, frozen shoulder, or arthritis. At Life Balance Pain Care in Atlanta, it is evaluated and treated with a non-surgical, regenerative-first approach: a thorough exam followed by a personalized plan that may include physical therapy, image-guided injections, trigger point therapy, and PRP, with shared decision-making at every step.

Shoulder pain is any pain, stiffness, weakness, or limited motion that affects the shoulder joint and the muscles, tendons, and small fluid-filled sacs (bursae) that surround it. The shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint built for an unusually wide range of motion, and that mobility is exactly what makes it prone to wear, inflammation, and injury. Pain can come on suddenly after a fall or heavy lift, or build slowly over months from repetitive overhead activity, age-related tendon wear, or arthritis.
At Life Balance Pain Care, we see shoulder pain as a signal worth understanding rather than simply masking. Our Atlanta team, led by Dr. Brad S. Bootstaylor, M.D., focuses on identifying what is actually driving your pain and addressing it with the least invasive, most restorative options first.
We begin with conservative and regenerative options before considering surgery.
Your plan is built around your diagnosis, with ultrasound guidance for precise, targeted treatment.
Care is directed by Dr. Bootstaylor and shaped together with you at every step.

We start by listening to your story and examining your shoulder's motion, strength, and tender points. We review your history and any prior imaging, and when helpful we use diagnostic ultrasound to look directly at the tendons, bursa, and joint so we can identify what is driving your pain.
Together we build a plan matched to your diagnosis, activity level, and goals. We explain your options in plain language and start with the least invasive, most restorative approaches, including activity modification, supportive care, and a clear path forward you understand and agree with.
Depending on your condition, care may include physical therapy and home exercises, ultrasound-guided injections for precise placement, trigger point therapy for tight, painful muscles, and regenerative options such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which uses concentrated growth factors from your own blood to support tissue repair. We tailor the combination to you.
We track your progress, adjust your plan as your shoulder improves, and reinforce the movement and strength work that helps keep pain from returning. If your situation calls for a higher level of care, we coordinate referrals so you are never left without a next step. For personal-injury cases, we accept attorney liens.

Most shoulder pain traces back to the rotator cuff, the group of muscles and tendons that hold your arm in its socket. Common sources include rotator cuff tendinitis (inflamed tendons), bursitis (an inflamed cushioning sac), and impingement, which happens when the space above the rotator cuff narrows and the tendons get pinched during overhead motion. Tendons can also tear, either suddenly from an injury or gradually from age-related wear. Other frequent causes are frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis), in which the joint capsule thickens and stiffens, as well as osteoarthritis, instability or dislocation, and fractures. Repetitive overhead work or sports, heavy lifting, falls, and the natural aging of tendons can all raise the risk.
Shoulder problems tend to produce three main symptoms: pain, reduced range of motion, and weakness. Pain is often felt over the outer shoulder and upper arm and typically worsens when you reach overhead, lift away from your body, or lie on the shoulder at night. With frozen shoulder, pain and stiffness usually progress through phases over many months. Because the same symptoms can point to different underlying causes, an accurate diagnosis matters. We take time to pinpoint the source so your treatment targets the real problem instead of just the discomfort. This page is educational and is not a substitute for an in-person evaluation.

Consider an evaluation if shoulder pain lasts more than a few days, keeps returning, wakes you at night, or comes with weakness, significant stiffness, or trouble using your arm for everyday tasks. Seek urgent care for shoulder pain after a fall or injury, especially with deformity, severe swelling, or an inability to move the arm. An accurate diagnosis helps target the right treatment early.
Often, no. Many shoulder conditions, including tendinitis, bursitis, impingement, and many rotator cuff problems, respond well to non-surgical care such as physical therapy, injections, and supportive measures. At Life Balance Pain Care we prioritize conservative and regenerative options first and discuss surgery only if it is genuinely warranted, coordinating a referral when needed.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is made from a small sample of your own blood that is concentrated to increase its platelets and growth factors, then injected into the injured area. The goal is to support your body's natural healing of tendon and soft-tissue injuries. PRP is generally well tolerated because it uses your own blood, though individual results vary and it is not right for everyone. We will discuss whether it is appropriate for you.
Ultrasound creates a real-time image of the muscles, tendons, and joint, so we can guide the needle toward the intended target rather than relying on surface landmarks alone. This can improve placement accuracy and help us treat the specific structure involved in your pain, whether that is a bursa, a tendon, or a tight muscle trigger point.
Your first visit focuses on understanding your pain. We review your history, examine your shoulder's motion and strength, and may use diagnostic ultrasound or review prior imaging. From there we explain what we find and build a personalized plan together, so you leave knowing both your diagnosis and your next steps.
Yes. If your shoulder pain stems from a car accident or another personal-injury situation, we accept attorney liens so you can begin care while your case is pending. Call our Atlanta office at 404-618-6825 to discuss your situation and schedule an evaluation.
